Hello,
so when you go to this page https://www.onvermijdelijk.nl/2020/11/09/minister-van-binnenlandse-zaken/
you will see a side menu that is related to all the ministers.
But when you go this page https://www.onvermijdelijk.nl/marketing/
you see the same menu. I then go to edit the page, but how do we change the menu? We would like a different menu for each category.
also, is there a setting that automatically makes the side menu adopt the theme colour settings that you see in the side menu, that is already there.

Hi Roy,
Looking at your site, it appears the side menu displayed is using Nav Menu widget which is not part of the Advanced Sidebar Menu plugin.
If you would like the menu to automatically change based on the viewed category you may use the “Advanced Sidebar – Categories” widget. If you would like to have full control over the menu which is displayed, the “Advanced Sidebar – Navigation” widget will work.
Once you have the widget(s) in place we will be happy to help guide you through any needed adjustments.
By default, the menus will automatically used whatever base styles your theme provides. Sometimes the theme base styles are a bit too specific for the menu to detect and we can help you add the necessary styles.
Have a great day!
Roy
Hello,
So I managed to get the Advanced Sidebar to show. But still cannot edit the menu for different blog posts and also cannot get the thing in style of the site itself.
As you can see here https://www.onvermijdelijk.nl/2020/11/09/minister-van-binnenlandse-zaken/ your menu is the top one and it does not have the same white background and black letters for the selected menu item that is currently displayed on the screen.
Also where is the setting to round the corners of the blocks, so that it matches the style of the site. (when you hover over the menu you will see the blocks are all not rounded. As opposed to Nav Menu below.
So moving one.
we need different menus for different groups of blog posts. but when I go to edit a blog or page I do not see any way to edit, nor do I see any menu to edit.
As you can see here https://www.onvermijdelijk.nl/blog/ we see the same menus as on the other blog publications. Whereas in this section we would rather use a different menu.
I have no idea how to do this.
kind regards,
Roy

Hi Roy,
First to address the menu styles.
For the background and color of the current item I see you have the colors selected in the block. The last step is to check to “Apply current item styles to the highest level parent item (when applicable)” box. This all allow the current item styles to override the “Highest Level Parent” styles.
There is currently no setting to select rounded corners, however this may be achieved with some minor custom CSS.

Hi Roy.
For the different menus in different sections.
The “Advanced Sidebar – Navigation” block will always display all top level menu items unless the “Display current item’s section only” box is checked. For your particular case of showing a list of unrelated posts, this is likely not desirable because the menu will only show the current post. You may use different custom menus by using multiple blocks but it will depend a lot on if/how your particular site allows assigning different sidebars/sections to different posts or sets of posts.
If you would like the menu to automatically change based on the post you are viewing, the “Advanced Sidebar – Categories” menu may be an option. The Categories menu will display the posts and/or categories related to the current post you are viewing based on which categories the posts are assigned to.
Let us know if we can help to make any adjustments.

There if one other option for using the “Advance Sidebar – Navigation” block.
This will display only posts assigned under the same top level menu item when viewing a post. We could use CSS to hide the top items from the menu so only the posts display.

Hello,
well thank you for the code, that did work nicely. Also I got the look conform the original style, kinda.
But having a different menu for different blog pages or pages does not work.
I made a recording…

please, with your next update, it will work soon.
thank you.

Hi Roy,
The Advanced Sidebar Menu plugin is intended to take a single widget or block and adjusted the outputted menu based on the current item being viewed.
For example, if you have a menu with the following structure:
The Advanced Sidebar menu can display
When viewing Books, Books post 1, or Books post 2.
While viewing Videos, Videos post 1, or Videos post 2 the menu would display.
The idea being that a large menu can be broken down into related sections automatically depending on what you are viewing.
The Advanced Sidebar Menu does not add the ability to select a different menu depending on which page you are on as the generation is intended to be automatic.
We could write a small plugin extension for you which would allow you to select a menu for each page/post if you prefer?
Roy
Hello Onpoint,
a small plugin extension sounds like a good idea. But maybe just make a small adjustment in the functionality so that everybody can use it.
either way, looking forward to it.
I made a short recording, going over what I think you mean to achieve, which would allow us to select a menu for each page/post https://ody.sh/lMXTM4hdk1

You are on the right track when you added another “Marketing” section to the menu.
To show only the related items in the Navigation Menu, you may check the “Display the current item’s section only” option.
In your example it will show the “Marketing” items when viewing any item under “Marketing” and show the “Videos” items when viewing any item under “Videos”
This is typically preferred because you can setup the menu once and not have to select a menu for each page.
More information may be found here.
Let me know if you would still prefer to be able to select the menu on each page and I’ll get in on our schedule to write the extension.
