I can’t explain why the update is failing on your site. Just to make sure everything was working on our side I updated the plugin on a few other sites/servers and everything completed like normal.
It appears to be something related to your specific host or environment. Since you are hosting with WPEngine you may be able to open a ticket with them and see if they know why it is failing.
Otherwise, you could download a fresh copy of the new version, delete the installed plugin, and upload the new version.
