Create Sidebar for Pages Using Categories

Resolved

Requested: 3 years and 10 months ago

Hi Matt,

We’re trying to target specific pages by category using the Target by URL feature, but anytime we try to insert a URL it doesn’t stick. How do we go about targeting pages beyond the parent/child structure using categories? Thank you.

    Hi David,

Could you tell me a little more about what you mean by “Target by URL feature”?

    Have a great night!

Towards the bottom of the widget there is a “Target by URL” with the following note:

Enter one location fragment per line. Use *character as a wildcard. Example: category/peace/* to target all posts in category peace.

    Hi David,

There must be another plugin or theme that is adding that setting. It is not part of this plugin.

If you can track down the plugin that is adding this feature, I may be able to point to you in the right direction?

    Mat Lipe.

Hi Matt – It may be this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/widget-context/

I may have installed it thinking it could meet our needs; I can uninstall.

Going back to the original question though, is there a way to target categories vs. page parent/child?

    Thank you.

Right now I see that I can filter for “Top Level Parent Page to Use for this Widget”. But, we were also wondering if there is a way to display a sidebar of posts or pages that appear in certain categories or tags.

    Hi David,

The plugin is widget area aware so there is no direct way to make separate widgets display on different categories, however you may use a number of other plugins to control how/where widgets display. Once you have you have the widget areas displaying on the categories you like you may then add the Advanced Sidebar widgets to them and select the Top Level item.

We currently do not offer any of these types of plugins directly, but here are a few from the community:

    1. Jetpack
    2. Widget Context (I know you already tried this plugin, but I’ve listed it for completeness)
    3. Dynamic Widgets
    4. Widget Logic

Each one will have their own usage and docs. If you decide on one, I may be able to point you in the right direction, but I do not support any of them so I can’t guarantee anything.

    Have a great weekend!
