I’ve got a couple custom post types. The taxonomies appear in the select list in the widget, but the widget is not appearing in the sidebar (I assume because it didn’t find anything). Maybe I’m misunderstanding the useage? If I’m on a parent category archive page, should the widget not show the sub-categories?

The widget is designed to display a list of categories which are assigned to the post you are viewing when on a single post (or custom post type) page.
If you would like the widget to display on category pages, you may use the “Display widget on every page” setting in the widget.
