Web Address & Description replaced by ‘Array’

Resolved

Requested: 2 years and 11 months ago

Hi Mat,

Something strange has begun to occur with the WebAddress and Description Fields for a Link. I use the new Pro in addition to Simple Links. I did not have a problem last month when I last updated a group of links. Nor had I a problem in the last several years when doing the same thing. When I clicked on my link category quantity, the list that came forward seemed to be ok. The addresses were OK in the leftmost column. However when I clicked on a link what appeared in both the web address and description fields is the word Array. When I attempt to save something in those fields the list indicates the addrss and/or description has vanished and the word “array’ still populates each of those two fields. It appears I’m successfuly able to make changes/updates to the other fields. I’ve rolled back the plugin simple links to the previous 4.9.1 version but I still experience the same thing. Im running SLPro 1.1.1 which I believe was the original install from more than a month ago. (When I go to add a new link, same issue)

Any idea what may be happening?

    Hello,

I have now run tests against the past 14 versions of the plugin and have been unable to recreate what you are experiencing. This leads me to believe there is another plugin or theme somewhere which is filtering the data and turning it into an array.

You could try deactivating one plugin/theme at a time then entering new values in these fields and saving the link. This will help narrow things down. If you find a plugin has a conflict, please post it so I can work with the plugin’s author to get it fixed.

If you are investigating the code directly, here are a couple of filters which may be the culprit

    1. attribute_escape
    2. get_post_metadata

    Hi Mat,

Thanks for following up with me. Ok I think I have a lead for you and it has to do with Gutenberg in some way. First of all, I use Query Monitor and no errors seem to be being thrown off anywhere.

In anticipation of Gutenberg, I have loaded it on all my sites and have also used either Classic Editor or the Gutenberg Manager by Uncommons Team v1.0 to (hopefully) disable Gutenberg (as much as possible) for now.

I’ve been running with Gutenberg active and various settings of the Gutenberg Manager in effect for nearly the last month. I haven’t had any repurcussions until now. When I disable both Gutenberg and the Gutenberg Manager, the problem goes away. When both are enabled the “Array” returns.

So, I’m assuming that perhaps Gutenberg may be the issue and that the Manager isn’t quite disabling everything.

Your thoughts on this would certainly be appreciated. Seeing as 4.95 is around the corned next Tuesday, I’d imagine issues/questions re: Gutenberg implementation are sure to crop up soon.

In advance, thanks for your help again.

    Hi James,

With Gutenberg not being production ready, I’m afraid I can’t offer any suggestions for compatibility. Right now there is no official release date and the spec for supporting existing meta boxes is still under discussion. Before Gutenberg is released to production, it will be backward compatible with meta boxes and will work with the existing fields (unless of course issues are created by the Gutenberg Manager plugin to which I can’t speak to).

I have not made any anticipatory changes to the code base of this plugin for Gutenberg quite yet because the spec is still changing and I prefer not to introduce any future bugs by jumping the gun. Once Gutenberg is complete I will update all of my plugins to use the new block structure while maintaining backward compatibility.

That being said… I have added an argument to the meta boxes which are having issues with the Gutenberg plugin to disable Gutenberg’s handling of them. Version 4.4.3 of the basic plugin was released just now which includes this update and fixes your issue. While technically this plugin is not fully Gutenberg ready until I convert the short code form over to a block, it will at least be fully functional for users who have the beta Gutenberg enabled.

    Hi Mat,

Looks and Works Great! It seems Gutenberg certainly was the issue. Nothing like having to grasp a moving target. It does not appear there are any compatibility issues with Gutenberg Manager (at this stage).

Again, thank you for your help.

    Jim
